Bulgaria towards a National Cancer Mission Hub
BULGARIAN NATIONAL CANCER MISSION HUB
Establishment forum: 11 March 2026, Sofia
The establishment of National Cancer Mission Hubs (NCMHs) within the Member States of the European Union is an initiative supported by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Programme¹ and is envisaged as a key instrument for stimulating national and regional activities under the European Union Cancer Mission² and the roadmap of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan³.
The mission of each NCMH is to bring together research, innovation, and public health policies in ways that cannot be achieved through isolated scientific analyses or policy actions at the level of the European Union, Member States, or regions. By initiating and coordinating scientific studies and collaborating with citizens and a broad range of stakeholders, NCMHs aim to generate new evidence and promote innovative concepts in order to inform policymaking institutions and trigger action in relation to four key objectives: understanding cancer; prevention and early detection; diagnosis and treatment; and improving quality of life.
ECHoS (Establishing of Cancer Mission Hubs: Networks and Synergies) is a European project funded under the Horizon Europe Programme, aimed at supporting the implementation of the EU Cancer Mission activities across all EU Member States through the establishment and development of National Cancer Mission Hubs⁴. Through the creation of NCMHs as a non-governmental national movement, the Cancer Mission can freely build upon extensive synergies with other European Union programmes and initiatives, fostering a truly mission-oriented approach. The ambition is that, in every Member State, European citizens and organisations from the fields of healthcare, research, and beyond are heard, and that their voices resonate together within a unified NCMH roadmap.
Since July 2024, BJCN, in cooperation with the Centre for European Health Policies and in associated partnership with the Bulgarian Cluster for Digital Solutions and Innovations in Healthcare, has been a member of the ECHoS consortium, which brings together 61 organisations across 30 countries, covering the entire cancer ecosystem⁵. The partnership network includes public health associations, ministries of science, ministries of health, national funding agencies, innovation hubs, universities, oncology centres, professional societies, and other organisations from both the public and private sectors. In this context, BJCN’s participation in ECHoS serves as a genuine driver and strategic force behind the creation, structuring, and operation of the National Cancer Mission Hub in Bulgaria. By developing a draft Roadmap for the Bulgarian National Cancer Mission Hub (BNCMH), BJCN invites all political and public organisations, as well as institutions from the scientific and governmental sectors involved in cancer care in Bulgaria, to join this pan-European effort—aimed at improving the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030 through prevention, treatment, and longer survival.
